Neural representations (ITD alone, activities due to ILD and envelope cues excluded) of ocean waves rolling on a beach recorded using the Neumann KU100 dummy head. Saint Augustine Beach, Florida, December 28, 2016.

Maximal model  -  The sounds of rolling waves are encoded by maximum neural activities in the left and/or right hemispheres.

Maximal activities mainly encode directions corresponding to the most ipsilaterally ‘tuned’ neurons, especially at frequencies below ~400 Hz. Maximal representations therefore mostly reflect the extent to which neurons are selective for ipsilateral interaural phase differences (IPD, ±0.03 cycles) as opposed to IPDs present in the binaural recordings.
